Article Discussion: Threat of state lawsuit looms as Fort Collins votes on fracking ban
If Fort Collins' city council votes Tuesday night to ban fracking within city limits, it can expect legal trouble from the state and the oil and gas industry.Such bans are illegal, Gov. John Hickenlooper said again this week.
State Attorney General John Suthers sued the City of Longmont after leaders imposed tougher regulations on in-town oil and gas exploration. And when Longm...

Wow, we are all F'd now. Where is the water going to come from? We are in a drought so I guess the oil companies will trump home owners and our lawns and trees will turn to dust and the cities will be forced to give our pure water up. The water will never be the same, the air will be polluted and we'll all live in a big oil camp. Well at least we'll have oil but I bet gas prices will just go up.

I locally do not have a say when it comes to my own town's water quality? I locally cannot decide how close a potential air and water polluting well can be to my child's school? I would say that our state legislators are in bed with COGA and totally corrupt. Would any state legislator like to comment?

Like so many other topics, anybody else notice the consistent pattern, so far, of two "thumbs down" (but no comments) to any post even questioning the ultimate wisdom of fracking -- particularly near population centers ??
Industry shills ??

Must say it is amusing to see that the governor who cares so little about federal law (look at the liability bill he has said he will sign) - spouts that state law must be observed over that of a local municipality. I certainly support any local government (right down to a city council) that would buck this filthy state government - and I would suggest that the governor himself and his socialist cronies in the statehouse have opened this Pandora's box...

Time to wear my "Frack Here, Frack Now!" T-shirt to Whole Foods on South College again. It's always interesting to see the looks on people's faces.

Jobs, feeding and educating families, including children, are more important that uneducated local government blowhards in some small town in Colorado (especially). I have listened for hours to Planning Commission participants. They are not very intelligent people. The former Mayor of Louisville, now a Boulder City Council member, is a serious alcoholic who sexually accosted a female engineer at the Christmas party years ago. She had to disappear, lost her job. He is ugly, disgusting, and stupid. This is just one example. These are the type of people who prevent real progress from occurring, who make decisions for townspeople. Feed your poor, Colorado, and let science and population demands go forward with what they need to do. Stop having children if you want to make a difference.

Love the image in my mind of your wearing your shirt at a Whole Foods store. Just love it! Maybe we can make some shirts that say, "I've Been Fracked" and then wear them at Whole Foods after eating a bunch of partially-cooked beans, which would produce the desired flatulence. This flatulence, while wearing an "I've Been Fracked" shirt, would be great theater. Real performance art, eh?
Seriously, though, if Robert Redford and Ono tell us that fracking and oil companies are going to cause all of our children to be born retarded, they are telling us the truth, aren't they? And to see the fracked-up anti-fracking crowds wearing and sporting their oil by-product clothes, Crocs, I-Pods, Super-Smart Phones, etc., just makes me pass fracking by-products.
Are celebrity 'fractivists' overlooking science in their condemnation of the fracking industry?

Money flowing into the state as public and private revenues is not in your best interest?
So how do you make a living, who supports you, and where does the money come from?

Again, its a pretty safe bet that those who think fracking in urban areas is such a great idea don't live now, and have never lived, anywhere near an operation thats fracking a well.

There not regulating Fracking.....There Banning it...Theres a difference...Ft. Collins is not saying we allow it ..but. There saying go away...We dont want you here. Our people dont want you here and the City is REPRESENTING it's people..Which is there JOB..Can the State FORCE Ft. Collins to allow Fracking Opperations even though the science behind the process is poorly understood and the health concerns are being swept under the carpet by the Oil and Gas Industry...? Only the courts will tell
I say Ft. Collins is a Representitive Government.. Not a special intrest Government....There right to frack is not a Constitutional Amendment to Colorado's Constitution...There rush to pollute the enviroment and the quality of life along the entire Front Range is not a forgone conclusion like The State would have us believe...Oil and Gas are not our overlords..We will not bow to there Profit margin..We will not give up our lives so they can make a buck..We will not endanger our Health our Communites health so they can come trash and leave...and leave a huge polluted mess to clean up after there gone... No....
I say Right on to Fort Collins..and more COmmunites should do the same..We are not Texas where BIG OIL rules the roost..They can strong arm all they want.. But this is our Home....not theres... Go AWAY....

Here's the problem folks:
"State lawmakers granted the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission -- not cities or counties -- exclusive authority over industry operations."
Deny the citizens the right to determine their values and practices in their own towns and cities and hand over authority to a commission that overruns local authority? That's not conservative, that's anti-democratic.
Time the people of Colorado wake up and take back the rights that were signed away to a commission that overrules local authority.
This is a huge issue that should explode right now.

COGA president Tisha Schuller wrote. "If not here, then where should your energy be produced?"
Get it straight, Schuller. We definitely want energy produced, but the people want CLEAN energy. It's only the corrupt gas and oil industry that is pushing to keep gas and oil energy a going concern! You can stick your fracking equipment where the sun don't shine. But I'm perfectly willing to let you throw up acres of solar panels or wind turbines near my home!

Kudos to Fort Collins for banning fracking within their city limits. The entire process of fracking is a messy one. You have noise pollution from the constant parade of semi-trucks hauling equipment and water to the drill site, dust pollution from those trucks that is not insignificant, and the risks to the environment that have not been fully investigated yet.
