The dollar is very strong versus the South African Rand, so everything is more than reasonable

April/May is great weather, changing from summer to autumn

Fly Business Class if possible with non-stops from USA to Johannesburg, or break the flight up into 2 segments through Europe. 16 hours is a long time.

Best meal: (Restaurant) "Simply Fish on Beach" Grouper or anything they just caught.

Best deal: Baby Beach

Best time to go: January thru June

Best travel tip: Must see, Baby Beach. Great snorkeling and diving on west side of Island. Island has it's own De-Sal plant, so drinking water excellent. Island Brewed Beer not bad either.. Don't go in late August-Sept, trade winds stop at that time of year. Great wind surfing rest of year.

Best meal: Lucius Seafood Restaurant, Amsterdam. The food here is terrific but you better make reservations as this spot is very popular with the locals. We had a great time with our waiter who was as enjoyable as the food!

Best deal: After spending a few days in Amsterdam, we went on a Tulips of Northern Holland River boat cruise with Avalon. It's hard to beat a deal where all of your lodging, transportation, food, wine and tours are included.

Best time to go: Mid-April to Mid-May depending tulip season but it's great to go to the Netherlands between May and September.

Best travel tip:
Look for deals on River Boat Cruises throughout Europe as they often offer specials that result in great savings.

Where photo taken: Halabja, Iraq (Kurdistan) in front of the Monument of the Halabja Martyrs. Halabja is the location where in 1988, Sadaam Hussein gassed 5000 of his own people during the Iran-Iraq war.

Best meal: Fresh fish from Dukan Lake. You can choose your fish from a fisherman along the banks of the river, have him grill it with tomato and onion, and then give it to you in a pan to go have in a picnic on the banks of the river.

Best deal: Second hand appliances in the bazaar in Erbil which I bought for Syrian refugees starting a new life.

Best time to go: April and May when the wild flowers are out and there still may be a dusting of snow on the mountains.

Best travel tip: Iraqi Kurdistan is "the other Iraq". This is the part of Iraq that isn't in the news. It is safe, peaceful, and under a construction boom. Sadaam's former prisons and military bases have become museums and parks. Go now before it is over run with tourists.

Where photo taken: On the barge, Lena Maria, while traveling on the Ringvaart Canal in The Netherlands.

Best meal: Meals on the barge were included in the price and were expertly prepared by a gourmet chef.

Best deal: This was a 4-day bike & barge holiday traveling through Holland in the springtime. All meals, bike maintenance, guides, and entrance fees were included in the $600 fee. The barge would travel to the next town while we cycled. We visited Haarlem, rode past blooming tulip fields, went to Flower Park Keukenhof, a flower auction, a traditional windmill, and a cheese farm.
Best time to go: Mid-April to the end of May is the optimum time for the tulips.

Best travel tip: Cycling in The Netherlands is wonderful because the terrain is so flat! Also, since all motorists also cycle there is a sense of safety that may be missing elsewhere. Bring your own helmet! No one who lives in The Netherlands wears helmets.
